You’re right – search engines are starting to pick up on the most rudimentary of content as far as flash goes, but the technology is still nowhere it needs to be in order for flash to become a valuable SEO-able tool. Here’s an article that goes into more detail about this:

Well, if fact google has been able to crawl and index plain text and retrieve links out of SWF text fields, so it’s not a totally blank vision.
